|
| Q. | What is DC-beer about? |
| A. |
DC-beer is an Internet mailing list of people in the greater Washington, DC and Baltimore area who enjoy brewing, drinking, investigating, and discussing good beers.
|
| Q. | Is this list available in DIGEST form? |
| A. |
Yes. When you subscribe, indicate whether you want "immediate" or "digest" delivery. This can also be set later by using the Mailman Manage your subscription web page.
|
| Q. | What topics are appropriate for this list? |
| A. |
Most anything beer-related is considered appropriate, even if the topic is not local to the DC-Metro area. Contributing useful information, anecdotes, humor, and general good reading to the discussion is normally encouraged. We like to keep things friendly. Flaming and immature behavior will not be tolerated. This is a forum for adults, so act like one. The list is self- moderating, which means that if someone starts acting like a jerk, he or she will be treated as such. People are free to disagree, as long as they do so politely.
|
| Q. | What is not OK to send to the list? |
| A. |
Please avoid forwarding large documents, ".doc" files, purely HTML formatted messages, hoaxes (see http://snopes.com ), viruses, flames, libelous or copyright material, conspiracy theories, spam, etc. Please try to keep the signal level high and the noise level low. Remember that there are 350 or so other people who all probably get plenty of email. Be Courteous!
|
| Q. | Are there any professional brewers on the list? |
| A. |
There are professional brewers, brew-pub and brewery owners and professional beer writers on this list, as well as brewery representatives, distributors and retailers. Whatever you say about someone's product will likely find its way back to the brewer. This is part of what the 'net is about - the free exchange of information, but be aware, word can travel fast in a community this size. Useless comments like 'Their beer sucks' are likely to be met with flames, so try to ask meaningful questions and make productive comments.
|
| Q. | Is this a good place to ask for homebrewing advice? |
| A. |
Generally speaking, yes. Many of the group's participants are veteran homebrewers. There are also many homebrewing sites on the web which are filled with information from beginners' level to pro. A couple good places to start are:
BURP members may want to consider joining BurpList, BURP's internet mailing list. Basic homebrewing questions are usually well received there.

| Q. | What's the history of dc-beer? |
| A. |
Dan Brown, creator of the newsgroup alt.beer, after a discussion with Keith Chamberlin at the Brickskeller, began dc-beer in January 1994. Lynne Ragazzini was the "list mom" for dc-beer from 1995 until November 1998. During that time the dc-beer list expanded to include quite a few people from outside the DC-Metro area, and provides subscribers with a relatively useful forum which was uncluttered with Make Money Fast Spams. Lynn Ashley became dc-beer's custodian in November 1998 and continued through until July of 2002, when Dan Brown resumed list management. |
