I've owned a Uniden Bearcat 200xlt scanner for years. Simple, but effective. The 15+ year old batteries are rather worn out of course.
Mine is relatively unmodified. I did dig around inside years ago to attempt to get a bit more audio out of the earphone jack, but don't remember having a lot of success. I recently discovered a headset from a motorola Cell phone makes a pretty comfortable earphone for the scanner.
Most of my scanning activity includes listening to ham radio frequencies, especially for APRS. I do enjoy monitoring the comings and goings out of near by airport Washington National.
